Though many of us take it for granted, a good night’s sleep is but a dream for some children—including those right here in our own communities. That’s why Freedom Credit Union is proudly partnering with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless once again on a critical initiative: providing beds for area children in need.
In 2011, the Massachusetts Coalition learned that many public-school students were not getting enough sleep because they did not have their own beds. In response, the coalition launched A Bed for Every Child, with a mission to help facilitate the healthy sleep children need to learn and succeed.
Last year, Freedom contributed $6,000 to the efforts of the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Cooperative Credit Union Association, enough to procure 24 beds for area children in need.
“Our contribution in 2017 accounted for nearly half of the total raised among the chapter’s eight participating credit unions, which I think speaks volumes about the people who represent our institution,” said President and CEO of Freedom Credit Union, Glenn Welch. “We’ve got some generous, compassionate employees and members who clearly are committed to helping their community, especially children.”
Every $250 makes a “Bed Buddy,” which provides one child with a complete bed set: frame, mattress, pillow, linens and blankets. FCU has already pledged a donation of four Bed Buddies ($1,000 value), a donation Welch generously has agreed to match. This year, the institution hopes to raise $7,500, enough for 30 beds.
Each FCU branch currently has a collection box on site for anyone who would like to contribute to the initiative and help Freedom reach its goal. In addition, from May 7–May 18, oversized teddy bear Tuck, the initiative’s mascot, will be on display at Freedom’s main office at 1976 Main Street in Springfield.
“Kids and adults alike love to see Tuck waiting to ‘greet’ them in the lobby,” Welch said. “He really adds to the spirit of the program, and we truly look forward to hosting him again.”
