Banking is big business, and part of that business relies on strategic acquisitions. While this can be very beneficial for the financial institutions themselves, it can be a hassle for the customers who suddenly have to learn new systems and processes or face new or increased fees. In our area, that’s currently happening with M&T Bank’s purchase of People’s United, which had previously acquired United Bank in 2019. Freedom Credit Union is the stable choice for you. Here, we explain why.
The Credit Union Difference
Because Freedom is a not-for-profit organization, we return profits to our members through high rates on deposit accounts, low rates on loans and minimal or no fees on services. As a cooperative financial institution, we exist to help you, our members, not to turn a profit for ourselves.
At Freedom Credit Union, you aren’t a customer—you’re an owner. Membership means you have a say in how the credit union is run. You can vote for the Board of Directors every April and can run for a position on the board.
Cooperative, Not Corporate
With a cooperative spirit, as opposed to a corporate one, we offer programs, products and perks that benefit you. All decisions are made locally here in western Massachusetts. We all live and work in the same communities, which means that even our philanthropic efforts—the many charities, organizations and events we support—are for the betterment of our entire western Massachusetts community. During the pandemic, we were even able to increase our philanthropic contributions to help neighbors in need.
We’ve got a long, proud local history here. We were originally chartered in Springfield in 1922 as the Western Massachusetts Telephone Workers Credit Union. As demand for the benefits of a credit union grew, we applied for a community charter. Today, we have 11 branches with membership open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin or Berkshire counties in Massachusetts, and Hartford and Tolland counties in Connecticut. To become a member, you only need to open a Primary Share Savings Account with a $5 minimum deposit.
Switching Is Simple
Make the switch to a financial institution with your best interests in mind. Our Switch Kit makes transferring accounts easy. If you are already a Freedom member, share the benefits with family and friends by encouraging them to join, too, especially if they mention that their bank has changed hands…again.
Need help making the switch? Please call our Member Contact Center or visit any branch.
