Membership in a credit union comes with a platinum lining

Celebrating International Credit Union Day on October 18

We do our best to show you the benefits of credit union membership every day, but you may not realize that Freedom Credit Union is part of a long financial tradition with its own annual day of recognition as well. International Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October every year since 1948, making this year the platinum anniversary.

Credit unions and other financial cooperatives encourage people to come together for the financial betterment of their communities and their members. As a member, you have a say in how the credit union is run, and benefit from those decisions. We return profits to our members by offering higher returns on deposit accounts, lower rates on loans, and low or no fees for most services.

A proud history

We are proud of our nearly 100-year history in western Massachusetts, and just as proud to be a part of the global credit union movement that began in Germany in the 1850s and then spread throughout Europe and beyond. You may be interested to know that the first U.S. credit union law was passed in Massachusetts in 1909 and served as the model for the Credit Union Act of 1934.

At Freedom Credit Union, we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of International Credit Union Day with a member appreciation day at all our branches. We hope you’ll stop by and enjoy special treats all day long on Thursday, October 18!
